I would NOT try the auction route unless you have someone with you who knows what they’re doing. You also need to be able to check out each individual one you’re interested in (most will give you the opportunity beforehand).
You can possibly get a good deal there, but most are in questionable condition and might need reconditioning. You have to keep in mind that most of these auctions will be attended by pros who know what to look for. The layman person looking for a good deal can get taken here very quickly.
I’d say $1000 or so. But check craigslist.com too. You may not even need to go to an auction.

Unless you know much about cars or have a friend that knows a bunch about cars, I wouldn’t get a car from public auction. Generally speaking there are cars in auctions that owners could not sell. I would try craigslist, autotrader. But do check the car out before you buy maybe even a mechanic.
